Addressing issues with the entire system in mind

Total System Management

The effectiveness and reliability of a water treatment program is determined by the following six factors - in fact, no program is complete without them:

1)  Appropriateness of the treatment program

Implementing the appropriate chemical program is a crucial to system longevity. A complete survey and analysis of water quality, application, usage (quantity), and related equipment is a must. Based on careful consideration of this information, both chemical and equipment product recommendations can be made. Selecting the cheapest water treatment program is not always the most economical option.  Additional factors to consider include:

> System and chemical compatibility

> Possible system contamination

> Ease and safety of product handling

2)  Consistency of system parameter control.

Once a program is established, system consistency must be maintained. Fluctuation of system variables is inversely proportionate to the effectiveness of the program. If all parameters are established and kept under control, optimum results can be realized.

3) Care taken in monitoring and interpreting results.

Frequent and regular monitoring is extremely important to maintaining system consistency. A technical service representative should carefully review testing results for interpretation. Plant personnel should be instructed regarding test result interpretation. After viewing the results, one must decide when changes are necessary; if changes are warranted, informed decisions must be made. Long-term and short-term water treatment program goals should be assessed, and preventative and/or corrective action should be taken.

4)  Accuracy of assessing upset conditions.

Accuracy is important when identifying problems so that unnecessary work and alarm are avoided. For example, whenever a car needs a tune-up, it is not necessary to rebuild the entire engine. Consult a specialist who will do exactly what is needed to fix the problem. We focus on the heart of the matter until it is resolved.

5)  Speed of response to correct upsets.

Response time to individual problems is the difference between smooth operation and headaches. The longer a problem is tolerated and/or overlooked, the longer and more costly the solution will be. Immediate attention to any and all situations promotes success.

6)  Determination to make the system work.

The success of a program is often attributed to the commitment of the plant personnel and the technical representative involved. The effort to understand system operation and the ability to work together are key factors to attaining the desired results.

Proper emphasis on these factors assures an effective water treatment program, regardless of system specifics. Plan ahead, see it through, and follow up on your water treatment program. And remember to select a reliable, experienced water treatment consultant.
